We had a great weekend taking our cocooning mobile, and Nian LOVED it. This weekend was our first big outing since we've been home. We have been to the store a few times, but no place with family around.
Saturday we went to our Great Nephews birthday party at my sisters house. We were sad we didn't see the whole family, but at the same time glad as it might have been too many at once. Nian had a great time playing with his cousins. It took him a little bit to warm up, but once he felt comfortable he was out of my lap and having fun. We were a little surprised that he was more interested in the toys than the cake/ice cream. So many new things to play with he wasn't sure where to start. He ate all the veggies and beef in the stew Aunt Shellee made which is great. At one point he attempted to get into my lap but quickly noticed it wasn't mommy's lap behind him but Aunt Vickie's. A quick look and he saw I was sitting right next to her. Vickie didn't attempt to pick him up and no one got in his face which helped him adjust quicker. Our biggest concern with our first outing was that people might forget the cocooning rules, but everyone did great!
Sunday we went to Joe's parents, and of course Nian fell asleep on the way over then proceeded to sleep for a little over 2 hours. It gave us a chance to visit but I did wake him up at the 2.5 hour mark so he's sleep later and he would actually be awake for part of our first visit with Joe's parents. He woke up really good, with none of his usual fussing. Again the our family did great with remembering our rules and soon Nian was again off my lap and running around playing with older cousin Nathan. He had a great time throwing the ball to Grandma and Grandpa too. At one point we thought he was going to climb into Grandpa's lap but he wasn't ready for that just yet. Maybe on our next visit.
Family visits during cocooning can be an emotional time for the parents, at least that's how we felt. We are so glad we were able to spend time with our families this weekend and that they were able to spend some time with Nian. Our cocooning is going much better than we could have hoped for, Nian is learning so much and we're learning from him too.
Right now he's eating Jello or as they called it in China where he had his first taste Jelly in a Jar! He's also talking up a storm, and no I have no idea what he's saying but it's a good conversation we're having.
What we have learned so far from this little guy is that he likes to go in the tub, but does NOT like to have his hair washed. He will watch Sesame Street for a few minutes but would rather play. I guess thats good that he's not clued to the TV. He will watch Thomas the train and loves it. We even got one of the trains at the store the other day. I can see more trains and a train track in our future. He LOVES his books and we have a handful we have to read many times during the day. He likes to match the pictures in his book to the TV. We had PBS on the other day and they were at one of the parks in Africa. He liked matching the animals to his book and continues to do so when we have the TV on.
This week he goes to see the Cleft specialist, and we hope to have a surgery date set by time our appointment is over. We will also have our 1st Post Adoption visit, on Chinese New Year how awesome is that. The hardest part of the visit will be picking our only 8 pictures to send our agency for the report to China. There are just so many of them, We are also going to work on wearing our "big boy" pants, I'm hopeful that he'll actually tell me when he needs to go potty before he actually "goes". We are not sure how we will celebrate Chinese New Year but we will have some sort of celebration at the house or maybe we'll go out to dinner.
These last few nights have been really good. He has gone to sleep and woken at decent times, with minimal interruptions during the night. Most of the time I don't think he's even fully awake and it's been easier to get him calmed down and settled in again.
